About us

A campus observatory culture, built by students

Astroneer is the student-run astronomy society of Siliguri Institute of Technology, Sukna, Darjeeling — where astronomy meet engineers.

We began in 2026 with a shared love of the night sky and a rooftop. Today the club runs a monthly observation calendar, a growing astrophotography archive and a set of long-running student projects, all built from the Sukna campus and nearby dark sites in the Himalayan foothills.

Membership is open to every SIT student regardless of department or year. There are no entry tests and no fees beyond shared travel costs for dark-site runs.

Everyone starts somewhere

No background is assumed. New members are paired with senior observers for their first few nights and taught sky navigation from scratch.

Observe, then argue

We prefer looking up before debating. Reading circles and student talks follow the sessions, not the other way around.

Share the sky

Outreach is not a side activity. Public camps and school sessions are part of the core calendar every semester.

How we are organised

Observation team

Plans session nights, tracks weather and moon phase, and runs the sky tours.

Imaging team

Handles capture plans, calibration frames, stacking and the archive.

Academics circle

Runs reading sessions, student talks and quiz preparation.

Outreach & media

School camps, exhibits, and everything we post on our channels.
